Hill College was recently selected as a top 10 Bellwether Awards finalist from more than a 1,000 entries from across the nation.

The Bellwether Awards recognize community colleges for excellence and innovation in one of three categories: instructional programs and services; workforce development; and planning, governance and finance.

The Burleson Opportunity Fund initiative was nominated by Hill College President Dr. Pam Boehm and was selected as a finalist in the planning, governance, and finance category. Dr. Boehm, along with Burleson Mayor Ken Shetter and Hill College Executive Director of Community Relations Nancy Holland presented at the Community College Futures Assembly.

The Burleson Opportunity Fund is a scholarship program open to all high school graduates who live or attend school in Burleson. The ultimate goal of the Burleson Opportunity Fund is to provide every high school graduate from Burleson the opportunity to attain post-secondary education.

Currently, the students of the Burleson Opportunity Fund have been eligible for up to two years, 100 percent of tuition and fees scholarship to attend Hill College at Burleson. Funding is provided by many contributing partners, organizations, and individuals who are from Burleson or connect in some way.

The Bellwether Awards are an integral part of the Community College Futures Assembly established in 1995.

The Assembly is sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida and focuses on cutting-edge, trendsetting programs that other colleges might find worthy of replicating.

The Bellwether College Consortium (BCC) is an elite group of colleges charged with the mission to address the critical issues facing community colleges through applicable research and the promotion and replication of best practices addressing workforce development, instructional programs and services, and planning governance and finance. Annually, the BCC holds a policy summit addressing pertinent issues facing community colleges. The annual policy summit brings higher education researchers, national and institutional leaders and industry experts to determine more effective solutions.
